Appstinence launched as a student organization at the Harvard Graduate School of Education for the 2024-2025 academic year.

*Upon graduating in spring of 2025, we are no longer formally a student organization of the Harvard Graduate School of Education*

At our bi-monthly meetings,
we debated all topics related to youth, social media, mental health, and education.

A place for Gen Z to lead the discussion. We aim to:

  • Bring a voice to youth who do not use or would like to stop using social media, and guide those who generally want to decrease its hold over their lives.

    Explore and advocate social media-free lifestyles in a way that works for anyone.

  • Educate on the harms of the current social media landscape, including persuasive design, youth exploitation and inappropriate content exposure, the attention economy, and deleterious health effects.

    Provide practical, research-based approaches to combat these harms.

  • Advocate for education policy that critically addresses emerging technologies in the learning ecosystem, considering a growing body of empirical research and stakeholder needs. Projects include phone-free and social media-free schools.

  • Engage diverse viewpoints on relevant and contentious topics such as school bans, federal curricula, and the academic debate on youth health and social media.

The founding vision is based on ‘appstinence’ but encourages participation from anyone interested in the topic, regardless of whether they personally practice appstinence.
